St. Francis Medical Center plans to open Region 8's only trauma center

St. Francis Medical Center officials announced Tuesday the hospital is seeking a Level III Trauma Center designation with plans to officially submit their attestation to the Louisiana Emergency Response Network this summer.
St. Francis is currently working with LERN to complete the trauma center verification, consultation and review process through the American College of Surgeons to become a national recognized trauma center.
Opening an accredited trauma center in Northeast Louisiana will help us continue to provide lifesaving care closer to home,” St. Francis Medical Center President Kristin Wolkart said in a news release. “We anticipate our designation will be approved by LERN at some point this summer, and St. Francis will be the first Level III Trauma Center in Region 8. BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Every minute matters when someone is having a stroke.
According to the CDC, someone has a stroke in the US every 40 seconds and someone dies every four minutes. That’s why having the appropriate care nearby is crucial.
“My left side became paralyzed and my speech shortly thereafter,” said Mark Napier, a Denham Springs stroke survivor. “I mean, I couldn’t say. It was unreal.”
Napier was experiencing the symptoms of a stroke in August 2020. He knew it was crunch time getting to the hospital. ....
