It looked pretty good, didn t it? The Mortal Kombat movie made all the right noises ahead of release. Ultra gore - check! Fatalities from the games - check! Loads of characters from the convoluted Mortal Kombat universe - check! Unfortunately the finished article - out today to rent in the UK priced £15.99 - fails to live up to the hype.
Mortal Kombat starts strong, with a fantastic fight starring Joe Taslim s Bi-Han - a ninja who goes on to become the frosty Sub-Zero - and Hiroyuki Sanada s Hanzo Hasashi - a ninja who goes on to become the fiery Scorpion. There s wonderful fight choreography to be seen as Hasashi flings a kunai attached to a rope (a cool origin story for one of the most iconic video game weapons of all time) through the heads of Bi-Han s goons. It s a fast, fresh action scene, and you can watch it in the video below:

While still a boy, Abraham Lincoln loses his mother to a vampire’s bite. He vows revenge, but fails in the attempt, narrowly escaping with his life. He is rescued by Henry (Dominic Cooper), a charismatic vampire hunter who instructs Abe in the fine art of dispatching bloodsuckers. Abe (Benjamin Walker) continues his fight against the undead well into adulthood and his presidency, making a last stand against the ultimate vampire foe (Rufus Sewell) on the eve of the Civil War’s defining battle.
I hope Joshua Lawson s back is okay after carrying this entire film.

Twenty six years after its first film adaptation, the new
Mortal Kombat dropped last week and I give it a big chef’s kiss . The gory ’90s video game coming to the big screen for the second time was exactly what I didn’t know I needed in 2021.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film is packed with the brutal and bloody violence you’d expect from a movie based on an R-rated video game with all the classic fight moves and memorable phrases “get over here” gave me actual goosebumps fans were hoping for. The movie had an astonishing cast, including Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Sub Zero), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), and new addition Lewis Tan (Cole Young). But out of the whole colourful team, my all-time favourite character was Kano, played by the goat himself,
