I read an incredible article in the
Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Weekend, which described the epidemic levels loneliness has reached. Shortly before Covid struck, the UK’s minister for Loneliness described it as the biggest public health crisis of our time. There’s something so poignant and poetic about having such an official title, ‘minister for loneliness’, for such a personal sensation. You know something has become a major problem, when even the government is paying attention: those cogs move slowly.
How did you create the show from concept to stage?
In a very fluid and organic way. Which, being anal, has been challenging for me! Each person has created a number of scenes. We’ve collaged these together under the guidance of Vicki, who is directing the show. There are personal stories, facts ’n’ stats, creative interpretations of the theme, and a really good soundtrack: look up ‘Lonely’ on Spotify. It doesn’t disappoint!

This month, the
Drill Hall Theatre Company shines a light on a world most of us would rather ignore with Patricia Cornelius’s electrifying play
SHIT. Directed by long-time NIDA teacher
Liz Chance, the play revolves around the lives of three women who have slipped through the cracks; sentenced at birth to exist in a world that doesn’t care for them or about them, in a society that will cross the street to avoid them. They are tough, resilient, at times hilarious and truly heartbreaking. Performed by
Shit have been removed by residents and council.
Actor and publicist Clare Atkins said the promotional material went missing recently.
âOur upcoming production of the award-winning play
Shit has ruffled feathers in the community, with some residents and Byron council removing and impounding promotional signage,â she said.
âI have been involved in local theatre for 10 or 11 years and I have never seen council impound our signs before, and we always place them in the same spots.
âThe council officer I have spoken to said they only remove signs if there are complaints about them, but she did not confirm if that was the case here.â
