A Louth criminal with 40 previous convictions has appealed the severity of his sentence for burning out a stolen car, in what a judge has described as mysterious circumstances.
Paul Crosby (25) of Rathmullen Park, Drogheda, Co Louth was under surveillance by the Emergency Response Unit who watched as he and two others jump-started the stolen Volkswagen Polo, drove it to a field and set it on fire.
He pleaded guilty to arson and a judge at Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to five years imprisonment with the final six months suspended.

At a sentence hearing in April 2020 Detective Garda Seamus Nolan told Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court that Crosby was being watched by the Emergency Response Unit when, on May 10, 2019, he was seen with two other men trying to jump-start the stolen car at an industrial estate in Drogheda.

A MAN who repeatedly stabbed and savagely beat his heavily-pregnant partner has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Imposing sentence, Judge Tom O’Donnell said what happened was a “very serious case of domestic abuse” which was at the higher end of the spectrum.
He added that any sentence imposed by the court had to mark “society s strong condemnation of such behaviour” and send out a “clear message of deterrence”.
Details of the incident which occurred at a house in the city last Easter were revealed earlier this month after the man pleaded guilty to several charges.

TWO men have been jailed following a violent incident at a house in Foynes during which another man was attacked and thousands of euro worth of damage was caused.
Joseph Mulcahy, 28, of Meadow Lea, Ballyhahill and Thomas Moroney, 24, of Mount David, Shanagolden had pleaded guilty to charges relating to an incident at Saint Thomas Cottages in the village on January 20, 2019.
During a sentencing hearing, Detective Garda Jason Mitchell said the defendants were initially “greeted” into the rented house but that things quickly “turned bad”.
He told Lily Buckley BL, instructed by state solicitor Aidan Judge, that both men started shouting and roaring and that they then “made a drive” for the victim.
