No. 9-ranked Syracuse was able to keep UAlbany at arm’s length in part because of two goals just as the Great Danes were on the verge of forcing a shot clock violation, and the Orange defense did its part by shutting down the Great Danes in the second half on the way to a 13-8 victory at the Carrier Dome on Thursday.

On Syracuse’s second offensive possession against Albany, Stephen Rehfuss drifted to X and fired a pass that flew well over Lucas Quinn’s head. It kept dribbling along the Carrier Dome turf, across the midway line for an over-and-back violation and an automatic turnover.
Moments later, this time with Jacob Buttermore at X, a voice from the sideline shouted “Lucas cut.” In front of the second-line midfielder, the Syracuse offense looked stagnant. Buttermore’s eventual shot was high, then Quinn’s ensuing effort was wide, and the possession ended in an Owen Hiltz turnover.

Grant Murphy’s stick, as it had been almost all game, was in the perfect spot to bat down an Albany pass to the middle of the offensive zone. Murphy calmly looked down, located the ball, and kicked it away from two Albany players and toward Syracuse defender Cole Horan. Late in the fourth quarter and up by five goals, Syracuse’s defense still didn’t let down its guard.

Syracuse, N.Y A brief pause in its ACC schedule on Thursday will give the Syracuse lacrosse team a much-needed chance to regroup.
No. 9 Syracuse (4-3) hosts Albany (5-2) at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse is coming off back-to-back losses to Notre Dame and Duke while the Great Danes ride in off a big win over UMass-Lowell.
After the test against the Great Danes, Syracuse heads off on a conference stretch at home against North Carolina and on the road against Virginia and Notre Dame.

The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team dismantled UMass Lowell 17-6 at Fallon Field on Saturday, as Graydon Hogg scored six goals, goalie Liam Donnelly and freshman faceoff specialist Regan Endres were brilliant and 10 different players had at least one goal.
