The joyrider accused of the attempted murder of a police officer in a 2018 hit-and-run has demanded moral damages in a fair trial complaint.
Liam Debono, who is awaiting trial for the attempted murder of PC Simon Schembri whom he ran over in 2018, has filed a constitutional application arguing that his right to a fair trial has already been breached, demanding moral damages.
Liam Debono, currently awaiting trial over the 2018 hit-and-run incident that seriously maimed police officer Simon Schembri, is claiming a breach of his fundamental rights.
Debono, who is serving a five-year prison term over a separate conviction in June 2019, has sought recourse to the constitutional courts, claiming that his rights were breached not only because he was unable to appeal that conviction but also because he was not afforded a fair trial.
He landed the five-year punishment after being spotted by an off-duty policeman driving a Fiat Uno at Luqa while out on bail over the Schembri hit-and-run incident the previous year.
Police officer Simon Schembri completed 25 years of service this week, marking the end of a career that saw him lose his right arm towards its end in a near-fatal accident while on duty.
Schembri became a household name in 2018 after he was dragged several metres under a speeding car in a hit-and-run incident in May that year. He had tried to stop 17-year-old Liam Debono who had allegedly been driving a third party’s Mercedes without a licence or a seat belt.
Debono stands accused of attempted murder and is facing trial by jury. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial was set to kick off in November however all trials have been postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
