The top three selections in the 2016 National Draft â Andrew McGrath, Tim Taranto and Hugh McCluggage â have all developed into fine young midfielders.
Essendon selected McGrath with the first pick overall with Taranto (pick 2) and McCluggage (3) landing at GWS and Brisbane respectively.
McGrath was named the 2017 Rising Star, Taranto won his first best and fairest in a star-studded Giants side in 2019, while Lions gun McCluggage has twice made the All-Australian squad of 40.
Former Geelong midfielder Liam Pickering would select McCluggage with pick No.1 if he was redoing the 2016 draft.

Former Geelong midfielder Liam Pickering has labelled West Coast âflakyâ and âflat-track bulliesâ after last week s 97-point loss to the Cats.
The Eagles are yet to win on the road this season with coach Adam Simpson labelling the performance at GMHBA Stadium âembarrassingâ and âweakâ.
Simpson is without a host of key players including skipper Luke Shuey (hamstring), premiership captain Shannon Hurn (calf), Liam Ryan (shin) and Elliot Yeo (groin). Jeremy McGovern is also battling a groin problem.
But Pickering says the Eagles must start winning away from Optus Stadium if theyâre to be considered a genuine premiership threat.
