The founder of the Manx Taxpayers’ Alliance says government’s latest budget offers “the good, the bad and the ugly”. All but one Tynwald member backed the financial plan for the next 12 months. No tax rises were set out by Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan, while public sector pay rose by 1 per cent. Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson was the only person to vote against the budget. Michael Josem appeared as a panellist at a Liberal Vannin Question Time event to discuss the Manx budget on Thursday (25 February) evening.

The chair of Marown Commissioners has backed calls to bring local authority legislation into the 21st century. Alison Lynch says she would support updating the current laws as long as it didn’t have a negative impact on the services provided. Her comments come after central government was urged to review current rules earlier this week. Mrs Lynch believes broadcasting meetings online could boost engagement. Dr Michelle Haywood, the chair of Port St Mary Commissioners, claims the current law prevents virtual meetings and needs changing in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

An investigation into an unsealed ballot box at a Douglas Council by-election has found there was no interference with voting. The number of ballot papers “tallied precisely with the number declared as issued at the polling station”, the authority said in a statement. Manx Labour candidates Devon Watson and Samuel Hamer were declared the new representatives of Derby Ward following the vote on 15 October. Mayor of Douglas Jon Joughin confirmed on the night that an investigation would take place after a complaint was made.
