Hill County sits right in the middle of what we call the Hi-Line, the long stretch of small towns that are sprinkled along Highway 2 from Glacier Park to North Dakota. Like most of the towns along the Hi-Line, Havre came to be because of the railroad, and because the only passenger line in Montana still runs along the Hi-Line, the railroad remains a viable source of jobs in Hill County. But my guests this month, both of whom left Havre for a time before returning, also give us a glimpse of some of the more surprising activities Havre has to offer.

Park board hears update on park usage, activities

Beaver Creek Park usage is steadily increasing, Superintendent Chad Edgar said at the Hill County Park Board meeting Monday. Edgar also let the board know that the south end cattle guard replacement has been delayed because the road department no longer wants to install it due to liability issues, further delaying the completion of the south cross fence. The board will be working with a contractor to replace the cattle guard in the future. Edgar provided a park update that included the maintenance being done on park vehicles and garbage trailer. Alley project becomes beautiful reality

Havre’s Art Alley is a reality! Following the completion of the mural project in September of 2019, which culminated in the colorful artwork that adorns the west side of the Hill County Printing building, the work of the local volunteer Havre Main Street Group continued. The next project was developing an art alley in downtown Havre. The chosen alley was between Second and Third streets and Third and Fourth avenues, or the alley behind several downtown businesses, including Havre Home Center and Cavaliers. But why an Art Alley? When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Montana, Montana State University-Northern, like the other universities and colleges in the state, was faced with the task of teaching students safely through technological advances, including this fall semester adding additional time to classes and having finals remotely. Along with all other campuses last March, Northern went to remote learning over spring break, then set a schedule with in-class learning the start of the fall semester, switching over to remote learning after Thanksgiving break.
