Parole reform bill puts age and number of years served as criteria for eligibility

Reform advocates are calling on state legislators to pass a bill that would make anyone who is over 55 years of age or older and served at least 15 years in prison eligible for parole.
Supporters say it s a matter of racial equality, arguing that the percentage of white prisoners who are granted parole is much higher than Black or brown inmates. This is about racial justice and whether we re a just and moral society, says Sochie Nnaemeka, of NY Working Families Party. We know that Black and brown New Yorkers are significantly less likely than their white counterparts to be released on parole.
For those who are interested in signing up their child for summer camp at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center, there is some urgency to do so.
Sign-ups for traditional and middle-school camps kicked off Monday morning, though, while the three other major camps at Wakahatchee, Estero and Veterans Park recreation centers sell out within a day, North Fort Myers usually fills up more slowly.
Last year had the same limitations, but after the start of school was delayed, camp was extended to 13 weeks.
Because of the pandemic and the impact it had on the start (and end) of school, camp will be shortened to five weeks, from June 28 to July 30, and limited to 54 traditional campers and 18 middle school campers, the same numbers as last year.

“Mama D” Helen Corine Aulds Davis, a beloved lifetime resident of Choudrant, Louisiana, was received into Heaven’s glory while sleeping peacefully in her home on January 30.
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2021 at Choudrant Memorial Cemetery in Choudrant, LA. A visitation was held from 9 until 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Choudrant, LA, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
Although her vivacious presence will be terribly missed by those left behind, we celebrate that she is with Jesus Christ surrounded by those who preceded her in death: her husband-Odis Davis, her two daughters Patsy Phillips and Martha Pee, one grandson Rusty Bell, and one great-grandson Cory Otwell.

HAZLETON, Pa. – They may have been over 1,500 miles apart, but students from Penn State and Universidad Central del Este (UCE) in the Dominican Republic didn’t let distance get in the way of a good idea.
More than two dozen students learned how to develop and refine business ideas during the Idea Design Lab, a collaborative program hosted during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November by the Hazleton LaunchBox supported by Pasco L. Schiavo, Esq.
The course, which included students from Penn State Hazleton, Penn State Abington and UCE, was held synchronously over Zoom in three, two-hour sessions and challenged participants to expand their critical thinking skills through brainstorming and other interactive exercises.
