The center is growing seven hops varieties this year, including two experimental types from North Carolina State University and the University of Florida.
Joshua O’Halloran, Los Ranchos’ agriculture program manager, said hops thrive in such northern states as Washington because of the long summer days.
The new varieties just now springing up will help show how a specially bred crop grows in southern climates.
“Next year, we’ll probably get some harvest on those and start to see how they do,” O’Halloran said. “It does affect the taste. Hops seem to be more mild down here.”

Albuquerque has a sizzling real estate market, with soaring prices. The vast majority of county homeowners had an increase on the valuation notices the assessor sent this spring.
“Everything that we do is really dictated by what is going on in that market,” said County Assessor Tanya Giddings, whose office uses a mass appraisal system.
While Giddings’ office is responsible for determining and maintaining the “current and correct” value of houses, commercial buildings and other properties, state law prohibits her from raising a home’s assessed value by more than 3% per year except in certain cases. The vast majority of the county’s residential parcels are subject to the cap, meaning many have an assessed value lower than market value.

In place of the traditional two-day festival, the event now features boutique lavender events, lavender festival survival kits, a fundraising concert with the Robb Janov Quartet on Saturday, July 24, the lavender market on July 25, and the Fourth Street Passport Experience. The Lavender Run is also scheduled to take place. A date for the run was not available at press time but information will be posted at lavenderinthevillage.org. Event tickets and lavender survival kits also can be purchased on the website.
