McMurray announces bid for 24th District Court Judge seat

HIGH COUNTRY — Longtime Avery County resident and attorney Tom McMurray announced last week his intention to seek election for a seat as for 24th District Court Judge, representing Avery, Watauga, Mitchell, Yancey and Madison counties. McMurray, a Republican, is an attorney at Appalachian Law Center and has two decades of experience in the profession, received his Associate’s Degree from Guilford Technical Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree from Thomas Edison State College, and his law degree (JD) from North Carolina Central University. After spending his first five years in practice in the Greensboro area dealing with cases involving bankruptcy work representing debtors, Tom and his family moved to Banner Elk in 2007, where he primarily has practiced family law. McMurray has been appointed to represent parents involved with Department of Social Services (DSS) cases in Watauga, Avery and Mitchell counties.

Greg Fowler named president of University of Maryland Global Campus

These lessons have driven his success as a distinguished scholar, faculty member and innovative administrator during his 25-year career in higher education. Based on that extensive track record of leadership in helping students succeed, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents announced recently that Fowler has been selected as the next president of University of Maryland Global Campus. He will begin his new position on Jan. 4.

December 9, 2020 The University of Maryland Board of Regents on Wednesday appointed Gregory Fowler as the new president for The University of Maryland Global Campus. He will begin his term on Jan. 4. Subscribe Fowler has been the president of Southern New Hampshire University Global Campus since 2018, and he was the chief academic officer and vice president for academic affairs for the institution years prior. While Fowler was president, SNHU partnered with the Thurgood Marshall Fund, the Kresge Foundation and Delaware State University to create a program using online education for near-completers, or students who started a degree but did not finish, at historically black colleges and universities. He has also helped more military and industry-certified students access academic credit.
