This week you can see classic cars, snag vinyl records, hear sonic sculptures, or watch hot air balloons in flight. Here’s a look at the best things to do around the Valley, whether you’re into books, sports, films, or tiny houses.
Local Bookstore Love
Hopefully you had a chance to shop local on Saturday’s Independent Bookstore Day. Now, there s a new reason to swing by the Phoenix location for Changing Hands Bookstore. More than two dozen new works by Laura Spalding Best, who paints offbeat urban and desert landscapes on everything from decommissioned traffic signs to vintage ironing boards, were recently installed inside the First Draft Book Bar.
This week you can celebrate Irish culture, up your cocktail game, or catch some baseball fever. Here s a look at the best live and virtual things to do in metro Phoenix, along with a friendly reminder to mask up and practice social distancing.
Drive-by Art
With some art spaces closed due to pandemic precautions, outdoor art installations offer fresh ways to explore the creative landscape. Over at Danelle Plaza in Tempe, which is home to the Yucca Tap Room, you can see work by some of the Valley’s best-known artists. Most recently, Kyllan Maney painted a series of murals and Laura Spalding Best installed a temporary work of public art made with cast-off traffic signs. They’re on view 24/7 just off the plaza parking lot, where you can keep an eye out for new works that pop up periodically.
Art Detour is back and bigger than ever.
This year what was once a weeklong art walk celebrates art not just in Phoenix, but across Arizona, for more than a month.
Through March 31, Art Detour will feature more than 300 arts activities and connect art lovers with special shows at art galleries, arts and culture organizations, arts-supporting businesses and visual and performing artists.
The annual event is put on by Artlink Inc., a nonprofit that supports local artists, art initiatives and events including First and Third Fridays.
“We want these 33 days to feel completely different from any other set of 33 days,” said Catrina Kahler, Artlink president and CEO.

We beautify our community : Artists are creating new murals along Phoenix s Grand Canal Elizabeth Montgomery, Arizona Republic
A few years ago Danielle Foushee came to visit Phoenix for a conference, the vibrant murals across town made her want to make the city home. They just made me feel so welcome, Foushee said.
She landed a job at Arizona State University and left Seattle. Once she got back to the Valley one of the first things she did was find all the murals, then she created the Phoenix Mural Project, a virtual map of more than 700 photos of murals and their locations.
