The Day - COVID-19's learning curve: 'It's been a long road' - News from southeastern Connecticut

Both of southeastern Connecticut’s hospitals admitted their first COVID-19 patient on March 18, 2020  an event their doctors, nurses and staffs knew was inevitable.
They didn t know much else about the coronavirus disease, which is not to say they were unprepared.
“One of the big challenges was our lack of knowledge about the virus and how it behaved,” Dr. Deidre Gifford, acting commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, said Friday, reflecting on the statewide response to COVID-19. “We were learning about the disease as the pandemic played out. Guidance was evolving in real time.”
At the outset, she said, there were no therapeutics, no vaccines. A lot of cases had to be managed before widespread testing was available. Personal protective equipment, or PPE, was in short supply. ....

The Day - 1918 flu didn't leave region quietly - News from southeastern Connecticut

The Mitchell Contagion Ward at Memorial Hospital in New London had been in mothballs for a while, but when workmen arrived to get the plumbing and heating working, it was obvious something was up.
Local health officials, acting cautiously, decided to put the building back in operation because they feared Spanish influenza might strike the city. That s the disease history remembers with dread as the 1918 flu.
But this wasn t 1918. It was 1920.
A year into the coronavirus pandemic, we hope we re not in a similar place. With case numbers trending lower and vaccinations starting to make a difference, it s tempting to hope normal times are just around the corner. But to get an idea of what a less-than-ideal transition could be like, it s worth a look at what happened as the last pandemic of this scale receded. ....

The Day - COVID-19 vaccinations ramping up this weekend at Mohegan Sun site - News from southeastern Connecticut

Mohegan Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz toured Mohegan Sun’s COVID-19 vaccination site Friday, pointing to the Mohegan Tribe’s collaboration with Yale New Haven Health and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital as a prime example of the kind of partnerships that are helping propel the rollout of the vaccines in Connecticut.
The tribe has committed about 20,000 square feet of meeting-room space in its Earth Expo & Convention Center, where YNHH and L+M staffers have been manning scores of vaccination stations since the site opened Feb. 19.
Before Friday, they’d administered some 2,000 vaccinations, a number they expect to more than double by the end of this weekend, L+M officials said. About 350 doses of the Pfizer vaccine were to be given Friday, with 1,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine scheduled Saturday and more than 1,000 Pfizer doses Sunday. ....

At least 960 patients signed up for an appointment prior to showing up at the vaccine clinic on Saturday. This was the first time Yale-New Haven Health began administering the one-shot doses of Johnson and Johnson s vaccine at the clinic. Health care workers were hoping to get more shots into arms earlier this morning.
Our goal is to get rid of 1,000 shots today and people will get completely vaccinated since this is one and done, said Susan Hauf, a pharmacist at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. ....
