Symphony, Tuscaloosa Amphitheater welcome live audience on 4th of July

After almost two years since its last major concert, the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater returns to public performance Sunday with the Fourth of July event that usually draws a packed house. Celebration on the River begins at 6 p.m. Sunday. The city-sponsored Independence Day show includes a kids zone of activities guided by the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority, a pops and patriotic music concert performed by the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, a salute to the military led by Mayor Walt Maddox, and is capped by a 20-minute fireworks display.  All events are free to attend. Every Tuscaloosa Amphitheater concert of the 2020 season was wiped out because of  the COVID-19 pandemic, since the musical acts chose to delay or cancel tours. The Holidays on the River ice-skating event, typically running November through January at the amphitheater, began and ran for a short while last year, but soon closed due to concerns over  adequate personnel numbers.

Memories of Franklin teen killed in Vietnam War burn bright nearly 55 years later

John Willie Woods Jr. head and shoulders smiling (courtesy of the Woods family). Submitted On a spectacular spring morning, a large American flag, a much smaller one and faux flowers adorn John Willie Woods Junior’s gravestone at Toussaint L’Ouverture Cemetery in Franklin. More than half a century after his death in Vietnam, Mattie Lee Kinnard surely would be touched that her son is so well remembered.  Woods was only 19 when the helicopter he was aboard plunged into the jungle in a fiery explosion, killing him and three of his crewmates on Oct. 30, 1966. He was one of 342 American military deaths that month during the Vietnam War, one of 6,350 that year, one of 58,220 for the United States in the lengthy conflict.

Lacy Lynn lends her soulful voice to the Lacy Todd Duo, and has new music in the works

A chance meeting led to the birth of a powerful music duo that’s been making rounds in the River Region, including a couple of local gigs this weekend. The Lacy-Todd Duo (Lacy Lynn and Todd Fulmer) perform in Prattville on Friday at Adrienne’s Downtown Bar from 9 p.m.-midnight. After a little bit of sleep, they’ll be back in action the next morning from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium’s Club Car Bar during the 17th annual Autism Crawfish Boil in downtown Montgomery. Lynn and Fulmer met thanks to a house party held by another of Montgomery s music greats, Wyatt Edmondson.
