Following reports of thefts by its employees, New Kensington says the city’s garbage hauler has promised to improve communication with the city and keep it aware of its trucks’ whereabouts. Representatives of city council met with County Hauling last week to discuss performance issues and resident complaints. “It was a good meeting. They understood all of our issues and complaints and took it very seriously,” Mayor Tom Guzzo said. “We’re not going to tolerate any more issues from them. New Kensington’s garbage hauler fired two employees after residents reported thefts of a package and Christmas lights, the company and city officials confirmed Thursday. It makes for a troubling start for the new one-year contract between New Kensington and County Hauling, which council approved in December despite past concerns over the company’s service. “In my opinion, this is 100% completely unacceptable,” Councilman Todd Mentecki said. “I’m hoping this is an isolated incident.” City Clerk Dennis Scarpiniti said a resident reported a County Hauling employee took a package from their front porch last week. Residents, environmental activists and local officials say they’re fed up with mud and odors emanating from the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill in Rostraver. They’re also concerned about radioactive materials they say are present in leachate resulting from waste material the landfill accepts from fracking sites. Rostraver Commissioner John Lorenzo, speaking Thursday at a virtual press conference hosted by community advocacy group Protect PT, said trucks from the landfill have been tracking mud onto adjacent Tyrol Boulevard, causing many motorists to avoid the road.
