Canterbury Museum revamp gets go-ahead, but still needs $70 million

Redevelopment plans for the ailing museum on Rolleston Ave would see a soaring blue whale skeleton and two whare in a dramatic new welcome space. The plan includes demolishing large parts of the museum that were built between the 1950s and the 1990s. The 19th century heritage buildings will be retained and restored, along with part of the 1970s wing overlooking the Botanic Gardens and part of the 1950s building on Rolleston Ave. John Kirk-Anderson/Stuff Canterbury Museum director Anthony Wright said the plans were critical to the museum’s future. “Our 20th century buildings have not been fit for purpose for decades and are currently damaging the collection they are meant to protect,’’ he said.

Less than half of 'shovel-ready' projects begun by deadline

Thomas Coughlan05:00, May 07 2021 Stuff The Government announced in March it was extending the bright-line test, reducing tax deductions on property investments, and would step up investment in communal infrastructure to support housing developments. Less than half of the Government’s ‘’shovel-ready’’ infrastructure projects have begun by its first self-imposed deadline, with just 44 per cent of the 150 projects under construction by the end of February. Last year, the Government announced it would fund 150 ‘’shovel-ready’’ projects, costing $2.6 billion. The projects, including the Naenae pool development, the Eastern Bays Shared Path, and the Wellington District Court, were meant to kick-start the economy with an infrastructure boom as the country recovered from Covid-19.

Mystery Christchurch artist behind March 15 tribute painting revealed

ALDEN WILLIAMS/STUFF Christchurch youth worker Silivelio Fasi is the artist behind a painting that came to represent the Kiwi response to the mosque attack. After the March 15 mosque attack, Christchurch youth worker Silivelio Fasi wanted to create an artwork that would honour the 51 people who lost their lives. So he picked up two doors that had been dumped at the side of the road and took them into his garage for a couple of hours. The artwork he created, which featured a woman wearing the New Zealand flag as a hijab, became an emblem of the Kiwi response to the attack. It was featured on the front page of
