City council to make Andrews Street-Laurel Street intersection a four-way stop

The Scottsboro City Council voted to turn the intersection at Andrews Street and Laurel Street into a four-way stop. As of now, the intersection has a stop for Andrews Street but not for Laurel Street, which has caused issues with car wrecks. Police Chief Ron Latimer reported that there have been 35 wrecks at this intersection since 2011, with four of them coming this year alone. With the wrecks coming from an intersection, Latimer also added that these wrecks are often t-bone wrecks with injuries. “The thing that’s interesting, over the last 35-40 years, it has gone back and forth. There have been stop signs on Laurel in the past, there have been stop signs on Andrews in the past and that ends up just causing confusion over a generation, it’s been a problem,” city attorney Stephen Kennamer said.

Scottsboro police request budget amendment for training budget

Scottsboro Police Chief Ron Latimer came to the Scottsboro City Council on Monday in the hopes of getting a budget amendment for the police department’s training funds. The budget amendment request is for $16,000 due to the Alabama Police Officer Standards and Training (APOST) raising the cost of academy admission in June 2020. The cost was raised from $2,300 to $4,300. When an officer completed their training from the academy, APOST would normally reimburse the police department $1,300 however that reimbursement has also been suspended. “Since October 2020, we’ve sent six newly hired officers to the academy at a cost of $22,800,” said Latimer. “Our total budget is $17,000 for travel and training and that’s to train 44 sworn, certified officers. That 17 usually gets us through but since this academy price increase plus the suspension of the reimbursements, it’s totally wiped out our total travel and training for this year already. That’s why

Better late than never

On Friday morning, Ron Latimer stood before District Judge Don Word, placed his hand on the Bible that his wife, Lana, was holding, and swore to do his job. That’s something he’s been doing for the past 29 years, but to make it official, he was sworn in at Scottsboro City Hall as the city’s new police chief. Better late than never, right? Latimer had served as interim chief for almost 10 months prior to this week, when Mayor Jim McCamy made the recommendation and the city council approved it, making Latimer the permanent police chief. An alleged incident last September in Marshall County, which was later dismissed, prolonged the obvious of making Latimer police chief, replacing Ralph Dawe who had retired. Latimer was accused of operating a vessel under the influence.
