Pirates won by 1.5 games over Cardinals
The Cubs were just 65-92 and wallowing in last place in the East Division, 19 games behind co-leaders Pittsburgh and St. Louis (both 84-73), when they hosted the Cardinals in the middle game of a weekend series on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Cubs starter Rick Reuschel was yanked in the fourth inning after issuing back-to-back 2-out walks. Dave LaRoche walked the first batter he faced, then served up a 2-run double and a 1-run single.
But LaRoche shut out the Cardinals over the next 4.1 innings, while the Cubs got a solo homer from Billy Williams in the fourth, a go-ahead bases-loaded triple from Bill Madlock in the sixth and 4 more runs in the seventh on 2 singles, 3 errors, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

Less than 24 hours after Corey Kluber pitched the Yankees first no-hitter since 1999, New York concludes a 10-game road trip Thursday afternoon with another game against the Texas Rangers.
Kluber faced one batter above the minimum Wednesday in a 2-0 win.
He tossed New York s first no-hitter since David Cone s perfect game against the Montreal Expos on July 18, 1999. The next day, Hideki Irabu started, and his no-hit bid ended when Rondell White singled with two outs in the first inning.
Kluber produced the sixth no-hitter this season, and it came a night after Detroit s Spencer Turnbull faced two above the minimum in a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners.

On this date in Texas Rangers history, Ian Kinsler had a cycle for the ages at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The game was on April 15, 2009, against the Baltimore Orioles, and it just happened to be Jackie Robinson Day around Major League Baseball. Everyone wore Robinson’s No. 42 on the back of their jersey, and while doing so, Kinsler accomplished not just hitting for the cycle, but something rare in MLB history a six-hit cycle.
First, the cycle. Kinsler doubled in the first inning, homered in the third inning, singled twice in the fourth inning off two different pitchers, and then finally got the elusive triple in the sixth inning. He wrapped up his game with a double in the eighth inning.

Connor Seabold is a control artist with a plus changeup. Those qualities helped entice the Red Sox to acquire the 24-year-old right-hander as part of the August trade that sent Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Nick Pivetta. Seabold has since been added to Boston’s 40-man roster.
His artistry isn’t limited to the baseball field. Seabold’s father is a graphic designer, and the 2017 third-round pick out of Cal State Fullerton is a chip off the old block when it comes to pictorial ability.
“My first semester in college, I actually tried to be an art major,” explained Seabold, who impressed at Boston’s alternate training site and will compete for a spot in the Red Sox rotation next year. “That didn’t go well, especially with my baseball schedule I had to tap out of it but I can pick up a pencil and pad and draw whatever I’ve got on my mind. I’ve always kind of had a knack for it.”
