(WECT) - The woman who founded a nationally recognized marine science program at Wrightsville Beach Elementary School is retiring after 20 years on the job. Ann “Cissie” Brooks is passionate about the ocean and has shared her love of marine life with hundreds of young students over the years. The elementary marine science program she created at the school is the only program of its kind in this region.

(WECT) - Three schools in Wilmington were honored by the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday. According to a press release, D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy and Wrightsville Beach Elementary School were both named Green Ribbon Schools while UNC-Wilmington was recognized as a Postsecondary Sustainability Awardee. These honors were part of the Education Department’s Green Ribbon Schools program, which recognizes schools, districts, and colleges/universities for “their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.”
