KARACHI: Renowned poet Rehan Azmi died here on Tuesday. He was 61. He was unwell for the past few weeks. He leaves behind two sons. Mr Azmi was born on July 7, 1958 in Karachi. He did his schooling from the city of his birth and studied in a local college. Known for impressive noha and marsiya writing, he also wrote ghazals and songs. He penned lyrics to many a song for PTV, and before that for Radio Pakistan. He was a prolific poet when it came to nohas; so much so that it was once claimed his name had appeared in an international record book. But that remains to be corroborated. All of his books were well received. They were Qalam Tor Diya, Khwab Se Tabeer Tak, Gham, Manzar Ba Manzar Karbala, Aik Ansu Mein Karbala and Rehan-i-Karbala.

According to his family, Dr Azmi had been ill for a long time. The family said he was rushed to a private hospital in Karachi where his condition remained critical till he passed away. Dr Azmi was born on July 7, 1958 in Karachi. He started writing poetry regularly from 1974 and was associated with the PTV for a long time. During this time, he penned more than 4,000 songs, including popular Pakistani song ‘Hawa Hawa Aye Hawa’ sung by Hassan Jahangir and ‘Khushboo Ban Kay Mehak Raha Hai’.

KARACHI: Renowned Urdu poet and writer Dr Rehan Azmi passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. Noted for his heart-wrenching nohas and marsias, Dr Azmi also has to his credit a vast collection of poems. Some of his popular works include Bargah-e-Aqeedat, Tehzeeb-e-Manqabat, the three-volume series of Aik Anso Karbala Mein, Hurriyat-e-Fikr, Lalu Kheeti Ki Diary, Nawai Minbar and Chaar Misray. Dr Azmi also wrote lyrics for numerous songs, including the popular Hawa Hawa sung by Hasan Jahangir. He authored over 25 books and 4,000 songs. Many of his works were translated to Hindi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Roman. Dr Azmi was born in 1956 in Karachi and began his literary career in 1974. Throughout his career, he was presented with multiple awards and certificates.
