But of the many thousands drawn to the elevation of Rabi Shimon last week, and the hundreds who entered the horror that was the tunnel of death, one group stands apart. From different cities, countries, and continents, they’d waved goodbye as they boarded a plane to learn in yeshivah and grow in kollel, to spend time in Eretz Yisrael or go directly to Meron. From Montreal and Manchester, Buenos Aires and Teaneck, each of these very different people had made their own way to the same destination.

On February 3, 2017 ( 7 th of Shevat 5777), which was the Friday before we read Parshat Bo in Shul that year, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks wrote what I would consider one of his most important Blogs to appear on these pages of TOI. I say that for a number of reasons, two of which I will discuss in this Blog. Firstly, let’s look at the Hebrew date it was published. There were four number sevens that appear. One number 7 is the date in Shevat. The final three 7’s appear as a series of three in the year 5777. Regarding the first number 7, Rabbi Sacks passed away on that date in November this past year.

My conversation with this modest talmid chacham, who is also a self-made scholarly historian, shows me just how much his life’s work has been influenced by his illustrious father and grandfather. The atmosphere that permeated the Kamenetsky home, relates Reb Dovid, instilled a deep connection to Jewish history along with a sense of pride in the rich legacy of the Litvish mesorah.
