Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 5

Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 5 Share this story Iowa Ben Holmes turned in a solid start in his first game in the Cubs organization. Holmes went five innings and gave up two runs on three hits. The part of his start that doesn’t look as good is that he walked four and struck out two. The I-Cubs had a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth when Jake Jewell entered the game. Jewell blew the save when he allowed a solo home run to Dustin Fowler. But he got the win when Iowa scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. Jewell’s final line was one run on two hits over one inning. He struck out two and walked no one.

Biscuits win season opener with 9th inning home run

Alabama News Updated: Tennessee – The Montgomery Biscuits were one strike away from being no-hit in their season opener against the Tennessee Smokies. Two outs, two strikes in the 9th inning didn’t bother Rene Pinto, who sent the next pitch into the stands for the game-winning 3-run homerun. Biscuits hold on to win 3-1, and are back in action on Thursday for game two against Tennessee. After rain delayed the start of the 2021 season on Tuesday night, the Biscuits finally opened their first campaign in over a year with a bang in one of the most unbelievable wins in recent memory, taking down the Tennessee Smokies, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Smokies Stadium.  The Smokies had a combined no-hitter entering the top of the ninth thanks to the efforts of starter Cam Sanders, Luis Lugo, Scott Effross, Bryan Hudson, and Manuel Rodriguez (0-1), as well as a 1-0 lead courtesy of an Andy Weber fifth-inning RBI-single.

Mike Zunino, Rays agree to deal | Tampa Bay Rays

share-square-559878 ST. PETERSBURG The Rays’ main priority this offseason is to add multiple big league catchers to the roster, and the club began to address that need on Wednesday, bringing Mike Zunino back on a one-year deal. Zunino, 29, will get $2 million guaranteed, which is less than half of what the Rays would’ve paid for the veteran catcher had they picked up his $4.5 million club option last month. The Rays also have a club option for 2022 that is worth between $4-7 million depending on playing time, and it includes a $1 million buyout. Zunino s return allows the Rays to have a veteran catcher that is familiar with the pitching staff. Over the last two seasons, Tampa Bay pitchers have sung Zunino’s praises for his ability to command a pitching staff. During the postseason, Zunino caught each of the Rays’ last 13 games.
