Girls grammar head warns over students being used as ‘captive audience for political messaging’ from online groups 27 May 2021 • 6:45pm Schools in the UK have faced protests after being caught off guard in the fallout from the Israel-Palestine conflict A girls’ grammar school has warned parents that pupils are “responding to rallying cries on social media” to stage pro-Palestinian protests. Woodford County High School, in north London, said it had removed images of the Palestinian flag from school white boards and pin boards and “at times (the flags) were inflicted on school property as graffiti”. Jo Pomeroy, the headteacher, stressed in a letter to parents last week that schools were “apolitical organisations” and “school populations are not to be used as captive audiences for political messaging by anyone”. ....

The composition of the Assembly is likely to be very different following the election, with several members stepping down and small majorities in certain constituencies. Labour’s Jennette Arnold and Nicky Gavron and the Conservative Party’s Tony Arbour are all retiring after serving on the Assembly for its entire 21-year existence, while Gareth Bacon MP, Andrew Dismore, Florence Eshalomi MP, Dr Alison Moore, Steve O’Connell, Peter Whittle and Assembly chair Navin Shah are also stepping down or retiring. ....
