READING, MA The Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials, a non-profit that provides professional development for financial officials in public school districts, honored Reading Public Schools CFO Gail Dowd with the John F. Conway Distinguished Service Award.
The award recognizes the accomplishments of MASBO members relative to enhancing the effectiveness of a school district in addressing its educational mission. It was established in 2005 and comes with a $1,000 contribution to the district in honor of the recipient.
Dowd led a successful $4.15 million override ballot question that was supported by taxpayers in 2018. The question was supported by over 60 percent of voters, leading to the first successful override in Reading in over 15 years, MASBO said.

Grant comes to us as a seasoned diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) activist, practitioner, and consultant. Most recently, Grant has served as the director of METCO programs at the Reading Public School District. There, he oversaw the district’s desegregation initiative, designed to provide equal access to educational opportunity for 70 K-12 students, and provided leadership and support to the district population in accessing cultural, ethnic, and pedagogical diversity. READING â The Town of Reading will offer emergency mortgage and rent relief to households under a new joint initiative with Reading Co-Operative Bankâs charitable foundation.
According to Reading Business Administrator Jayne Wellman, eligible receiptients under the grant program could receive as much as $5,000 in financial assistance to cover up to two-months worth of rent or mortgage payments.
Those interested in applying for the special relief, which will come from a limited amount of federal COVID-19 aid available to the municipality, must fill out an application no later than 5 p.m. on Dec. 21. Awards will reportedly be granted sometime before the start of 2021.
