The upcoming closure of an Associated supermarket is prompting food desert fears
Crown Heights residents are worried about a food desert potentially forming in the western part of their neighborhood, the
Brooklyn Paperreports. The Associated supermarket, at 975 Nostrand Avenue, near Montgomery Street, was recently given a 90-day notice to leave the building after lease negotiations reportedly fell through.
Even though a commercial eviction moratorium is currently in place through the end of this month and will likely be extended like it has previously by Gov. Andrew Cuomo throughout the pandemic local residents fear that this is the end of the road for the grocery store. While there are some other options in the area like a Western Beef supermarket further west on Empire Boulevard, local residents say they will have to trek significantly longer distances to shop for groceries.
