Ryan Rice lifts the hood prior to working on the engine of a rally car that belongs to a customer and friend who will be racing in the upcoming New England Forest Rally.
Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal
Ryan Rice’s association with cars has come a long way since he was a little kid whose parents had to be pry him out of his beloved cozy coupe.
Ironically, it was his growing daughter that lured him out of a real race car a couple years ago. But Rice is never too far from an automobile with speed.
He won’t be driving in the upcoming New England Forest Rally, which runs through the Bethel and Rumford areas this weekend, but he will be invaluable for a handful of drivers who will enter the race, lending his expertise in cars and how to make them go faster. It’s the same thing Rice does every day at his Lisbon performance shop, Portland Performance, where Rice said he does “anything from oil changes to full rally, track or drag racing builds.”

Dear Mr. Wolff: One of my opponents responded slowly to a key-card ask, and his partner bid on to a making slam. The responder had four aces and showed one or four key-cards with a five-diamond call. Diamonds was the agreed trump suit. Should we have called the director? â Legal Eagle, Honolulu, Hawaii
ANSWER: The hesitation might make it safer for the ace-asker to bid on. If responder was considering a different call, it makes it less likely that he had a normal hand with one key-card. Of course, if responder had already shown enough high cards such that a hand with one key-card was impossible, I think the continuation would be allowed.

Larry Edward Tomko, 74, passed away peacefully in his home in Dunkirk, MD on February 18, 2021.
Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his family, church, and community and served them all faithfully during his lifetime. He had a passion for helping others whether it be for family, friends, or the community. He was a highly-skilled contractor, who took great pride in the home he built for his family where they have resided for over 40 years. Larry enjoyed beautifying his home in the woods and found raking/blowing leaves to be therapeutic and now leaves this fun for his children (Thanks, Dad aka Bubba J. ).
