ISLAMABAD: The Centre for International Strategic Studies has underscored the need for constructing more nuclear reactors in the country to help meet rising energy demands as they curb greenhouse.
Will Wyoming Embrace Nuclear Power?
TerraPower, which announced this week it would site a demonstration sodium-cooled fast reactor in the state of Wyoming, contacted the mayors of four potential locations just hours before the announcement, according to the Casper Star Tribune.
According to the company, the next generation nuclear power demonstration project could be up and running by 2028 with the potential site selected by the end of the year. As such, the company gave the mayors a quick heads up on the announcement, which has long-term economic and environmental impacts for the state and for well beyond its borders, as well.
Toshiba Completes ITER Field Coil
Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation of Japan said Tuesday it had completed its first manufacturing of a toroidal field coil for ITER, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, which is under construction in southern France.
The toroidal field coils are huge superconducting magnets that are required to contain the vast amounts of plasma energy created by the fusion reactor in what is considered a mega-project involving funding from The European Union, the United States, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and India).
Toshiba completed the construction of the first coil case in December 2018. The first field coil itself has been entrusted by the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology as one of the largest of its kind in the world. This coil measures 16.5 meters in length, 9 meters in width. It weighs approximately 300 tons, Toshiba said.
The China National Nuclear Corporation said its 24
th commercial reactor had reached commercial operations status after completing 100 continuous hours of operations at full power.
The successful achievement of Tianwan Unit 6 reaching commercial status also marks the completion of the Tainwan Phase III Project, which was designated as construction of Units 5 and 6 at the plant. Both of these reactors are AXPE1000 model reactors. Construction of each began with the first concrete pours for each unit in 2015 for Unit 5 and 2016 for Unit 6, according to Nuclear Engineering International.
With no significant delays impeding the schedules, Tianwan Unit 5 reached commercial operations status in 2020. The first of the previous four reactors began operations in June 2007, was the first of four Russian-supplied Gidropress VVER reactors. In addition, Tianwan Units 7 and 8, will also be Russian-designed units.
