The west side of Cornelius ends in dozens of tiny peninsulas that spread across Lake Norman like tree roots through soil. The bedroom community north of Charlotte is only 15 square miles but boasts 75 miles of lakefront, likely the most of any North Carolina community.
Around a decade ago, locals noticed an uptick in the number of out-of-town guests booking homes through then-nascent rental platforms like Vrbo and Airbnb.
They weren t pleased.
“We’re not a vacation town,” said Frances Dawson, a realtor who lives in Cornelius. “The people who spent their good hard-earned money on these waterfront properties didn’t want to listen to loud music and 2 a.m. pool parties.”

Chapel Hill to Regulate Short-Term Rentals, Airbnbs in Community
Short-Term Rentals, like those of Airbnb, have come under scrutiny by Town of Chapel Hill officials as the current, local market is left mostly unregulated.
Short-Term Rentals, or STRs, is the label for renting all or part of a residential dwelling for less than 30 days. The number of STRs has grown in recent years with the support of websites such as Airbnb, VRBO and Homeaway.
In 2019, Chapel Hill made up nearly 81 percent of the Short-Term Rentals market in Orange County.
In March of 2020, there were 334 active STRs in Chapel Hill, however, according to a website from the town, a majority of these rentals are currently unregulated and have not gone through the town’s permitting process to ensure health and safety standards are met.

RALEIGH CITY COUNCIL REFUSES TO EXPAND NON-DISCRIMINATION ORDINANCE: The city of Raleigh will wait to expand protections for LGBTQ people, Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said, despite other governments expanding their non-discrimination ordinances now that a state ban has ended. “If we are going to pass something that can’t be enforced and isn’t legal, then we are not really accomplishing anything,” Baldwin said. “We are just contributing to the noise. Raleigh City Attorney Robin Tatum said she couldn’t comment on the city’s authority to expand its non-discrimination order based on gender identity, sexuality and military status, citing attorney-client privilege. The School of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill can’t provide a “clear answer” on the legality of the local ordinances, said Rebecca Badgett, a local government legal educator.
