Michigan is one of two states that does not require lawmakers to publicly disclose at least some financial data, “and that would not change under this package,” said Rep. Bill Sowerby, D-Clinton Township.
“It is the public s right to know what financial conflicts those they are electing might have,” he said. “It is therefore so disappointing to me that this package fails to do that, and rather moves Michigan towards more darkness and obscurity.”
Supporters, however, contend the legislation will make significant improvements to Michigan ethics laws, which currently require no financial disclosure by lawmakers or other officials, and begin to restore waning public trust in government.

Lansing The Republican and Democratic leaders of the Michigan House revealed a plan Tuesday to institute wide-ranging government ethics reforms, targeting policies that have been ranked worst nationally for transparency.
At least some of the bills are proposing fundamental changes for lobbying and disclosure laws, which have been agreed on by House members on both sides of the aisle. They will be introduced later this week and discussed in committee beginning next week.
If all of them became law, they would alter how Lansing operates, providing additional oversight, de-emphasizing the so-called lame duck period and changing the House process for deciding when bills take effect. Similar reforms have been debated in Michigan for years.

The new legislative session brings with it substantial turnover for the Michigan House of Representatives, which will have 28 new lawmakers serving their first full terms in office.
Most of the freshman class will fill House seats vacated by members who hit their six-year term limit serving in the state House, although some defeated incumbents or are replacing members who sought other offices last fall.
Speaker-elect Jason Wentworth, R-Clare, and Democratic Leader-elect Donna Lasinski, D-Scio Township, will fill the leadership slots left open by the departures of former Reps. Lee Chatfield and Christine Greig.
