Ritchie Community League raises $6K to paint rainbow crosswalks

EDMONTON Two more Pride crosswalks will be painted in Edmonton after a community league raised $6,000 in funds to support the initiative. The Ritchie Community League raised more than $6,000 to support their two-year project of having a pair of inclusive rainbow crosswalks at the intersection of 76 Avenue and 96 Street. In a post on their Facebook page, the Ritchie Community League said the crosswalks will be painted Friday evening. The community league partnered with the City of Edmonton in order to safely paint the crosswalks. The funds will pay for the painting crew and any traffic safety peace officers needed. Money will also go towards refreshing the paint next summer.

How casino closures are draining the resources of Alberta charities and First Nations

Posted: Apr 26, 2021 6:00 AM MT | Last Updated: April 26 Casinos in Alberta have been closed for most of the pandemic. Groups that rely on charitable gaming revenue from casino events have been trying to raise funds in other ways.(nazarovsergey/Shutterstock) The closure of casinos in Alberta is affecting not just the operators bottom lines but also hundreds of charities and First Nations that depend on gaming revenue. During casino events, volunteers from sports teams, veterans groups, non-profits and community leagues exchange their labour for a portion of casino revenues. In 2019, that revenue share amounted to $168 million.  Many groups have seen their casino events postponed and future events are up in the air.

Ritchie Community League launches creative way to fundraise for new hall

EDMONTON When you walk into the Ritchie Community League s home base, Ritchie Hall, you might notice it needs some work. Built in 1961, the hall has a somewhat dated look to go along with its sinking floor. In years past, the building has been the community league s main source of income, with rentals of the space going for $500 a night. Amid COVID-19 though, the community league has been forced to limit the building s usage since March, costing them valuable rental fees.  That s why members of the community league s volunteer board came up with a creative way to raise funds for the building, while promoting local businesses in the area at the same time.
