Capt. Tamara Long-Archuleta Memorial Scholarship update
Due to a lack of response from home-schoolers, the Capt. Tammy Memorial Scholarship is now open to any student who graduated from a Valencia County high school and is attending UNM or UNM-Valencia full-time regardless of what year of college. Hurry and mail a copy of transcripts along with a one-page essay about how this scholarship will help you in your education progress to: Scholarship, PO Box 819, Belen, N.M., 87002. Spread the word; Long-Archuleta’s parents would like to give 10 $500.00 scholarships this year. The deadline is Sunday, Aug. 1.
Food for seniors
The ECHO CSFP Program is offering free food for senior citizens who are 60 years old and older from 8 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, July 13, at the Belen Community Center, 305 Eagle Lane. The text gives the reader explanations of topics in accompanying images.

The first chapter is about the infamous Bataan Death March in 1942 in the Philippines. Many New Mexican soldiers died of torture, starvation and tropical diseases while under siege in Bataan province, during the march and later in hellish Japanese prisoner-of-war camps.
