SWINDON’S Festival of Literature has become an international sensation since it went online. The pandemic forced one of the biggest events in the town’s cultural calendar to go virtual but this had the unexpected bonus of allowing viewers and guests from around the world to take part. More than 40 events will premiere on Zoom and the festival’s YouTube channel throughout next week with a line-up of speakers that aims to intrigue and spark discussions as well as entertain. Acclaimed authors Jasper Fforde, Jon McGregor, Blake Morrison and Sally Bailey feature along with former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, guitarist Richard Durrant, former professional boxer Paddy Fitzpatrick and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer.
THE Swindon Festival of Literature returns next month after successfully hosting virtual events during the first lockdown. The town’s long-running cultural extravaganza is using the lessons learned from its first online-only festival in 2020 to bring more fascinating talks by amazing authors to the people of Swindon. More than 40 events will be held between May 3 and 9 via the festival’s website and can be viewed from all over the world. Authors on this year’s line-up include Richard Thompson, Rowan Williams, Miranda Sawyer, Blake Morrison, Jasper Fforde, Ella Al-Shamahi, Natalie Haynes, Ollivier Pourriol, Sally Bayley, Richard Durrant, and Claudia Hammond.
AN OPEN air theatre has announced a jam-packed summer programme of events ahead of its reopening next month. Tickets are now on sale for the spring and summer season at Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT), with a range of shows on offer, from comedy to opera. The venue in Dyke Road Park will kick off with a Brighton College production of Shakespeare s Cymbeline on May 19. Next month will also feature The Lady In The Van, a funny and poignant tale from the same company which produced last year’s smash hit Abigail’s Party, and in June there will be plenty of stand-up shows during the venue s comedy festival, as well as music from Brighton s own maverick guitarist Richard Durrant.
