WHMI 93 5 Local News : Judge To Rule On Chelsea Protest Tickets

February 22, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com A Washtenaw County judge is set to rule today on whether citations issued last summer during a racial injustice protest in Chelsea should be dismissed. That follows a protest Friday in front of the Chelsea Police Department after Chief Edward Toth said his department will not dismiss the civil charges against 29 people issued $180 tickets for impeding traffic. All of those who were ticketed last July, including seven minors, were members of the youth-led Anti-Racist Chelsea Youth (ARCY) group. They alleged that Chelsea Police targeted them exclusively, including taking surveillance pictures. Earlier last week, Chelsea City Council voted unanimously to recommend that Chief Toth dismiss the charges.

Chelsea City Council asks police to drop charges against protestors for blocking traffic

Credit Andrew Jameson / bit.ly/1xMszCg The summer of 2020 was marked by protests for racial justice following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers. Residents of Chelsea, a small town of around 5,000 people, 95% of whom are white, made their voices heard with marches and protests of their own. The Chelsea Police Department issued at least 18 tickets to those protesters for blocking the road. Last night, Chelsea City Council recommended that Police Chief Ed Toth drop the charges against the protestors. The majority of Chelsea residents who spoke during the public comment portion were in favor of dropping the charges. Among those who spoke were parents of kids involved in Anti-Racist Chelsea Youth, or ARCY. Many of those members organized the protests and speeches, and were subsequently issued tickets.
