How X-Troop helped to defeat the Third Reich – The Forward

Lieutenant George Lane is in big trouble. His waterlogged Sten gun has jammed, and bullets from German rifles and MP40s are flying all around him. He is hiding in the surf next to beach obstacles made of thin iron girders. The Nazis are shooting blindly into the darkness while Lane and Captain Roy Wooldridge, an expert in mines, desperately seek cover. It’s May 17, 1944, Ault, northern France, two hours after midnight, three weeks before D-Day. Something has spooked the Germans, and Lane doesn’t know whether they have been discovered and the mission compromised, or the bored guards are now simply letting off steam. He does know that if they are taken prisoner, it will mean almost certain death. Adolf Hitler’s 1942

Judge: No work on entertainment pier as lawsuit is pending

Judge: No work on entertainment pier as lawsuit is pending A judge has issued an order that blocks a company from starting construction on an entertainment pier on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Harrison County Chancery Court Judge Jennifer Schloegel issued the temporary restraining order Wednesday in a lawsuit that the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office filed in July 2019, the Sun Herald reported. The state argues that before a pier can be built at the end of Veterans Avenue in Biloxi, a public trust tidelands lease is required through the secretary of state. The city disagrees. A hearing is set for May 5.

10 Extraordinary Acts Of Compassion In Wartime

10 Extraordinary Acts Of Compassion In Wartime Regular readers of Listverse’s sister site will already be familiar with the story of Henry Tandey, a World War I British soldier who honorably decided not to fire on a wounded enemy soldier only for that soldier to turn out to be a young Adolf Hitler. But the tale’s twist shouldn’t be allowed to obscure just how noble Tandey’s actions were. Compassion is a quality that is usually hard to come by in times of war. It’s even harder to show it to the enemy. After all, how can you be kind to someone who might actively have tried to kill you? Maybe that’s why compassion is truly a quality we can all admire.
