Perez wants to be a Hall of Famer. He’s open about this. His case needs work, and this is a quick and superficial way to look at it but at the same age he has slightly better offensive numbers, one fewer Gold Glove and one fewer World Series ring than Yadier Molina. Molina also had two top 4 MVP finishes; Perez has zero.
But if his case needs work, Perez believes he has more work in him.
“The way that I feel?” he said. “I think I’m going to play catcher until I’m 45.”

They’ve gone through these sorts of crucibles enough now, Matheny said afterwards, that they can have legitimate conviction about being “right in this” in such games.
Maybe they can consider the notion as part of the DNA of this team.
With a certain caveat: This characteristic is only true until it isn’t.
“We need stuff like that to continue to happen,” Matheny said.
Of the Royals’ 45 games, 12 have been decided by one run. The Royals are 7-5 in those games. Matheny thinks there will be more.

“I don’t think anybody wants to hear it, but we weren’t playing terrible baseball … It’s just we weren’t getting different components each night,” he said. “It sounds ridiculous when you lose 11 games in a row to say that there was some good stuff happening, but there was. We’ve got to be honest when there is.”.

“We’re not happy, and it’s embarrassing when we don’t play the kind of baseball that we know we can play,” manager Mike Matheny said. “There should be a lot of quiet right now. Because this is something that stings. We take a lot of pride in how we go about our business, and when it doesn’t look like we want it to look, it doesn’t sit right.”
“Anytime those guys go out there, you feel like they’re just going to put up a bunch of zeros,” Minor said of the bullpen. “But I feel like the starting staff me especially needs to do a better job and give those guys a break. I feel like those guys have been going a lot of back-to-backs, throwing multiple innings, and they’re asking those guys to do a lot.”

“I truly believe that with this team and the fight that we have, we’re really good,” Keller said. “We’re sneaking up on a lot of teams, and we’re surprising a lot of people. … It doesn’t seem like we’re ever out of the game. The group as a whole is a lot of fun to be around. We love each other. We fight for each other. It’s a lot of fun to be in this clubhouse.”
“These guys are expecting that somebody’s gonna pick us up, somebody is going to be able to make something happen, to give us a chance to win,” Matheny said. “If not, we’re just going to dig our heels in and scrap our way through. … People call them little things, but they’re big things. They’re really important for teams that fight like our team fights.”
