Church leaders and architects outlined an ambitious project for Romsey Abbey, that could cost up to £7million. A new cloister was proposed on the southern side of the building, an enclosed walkway to run alongside the Abbey to preserve the external Saxon Rood and plans to adapt space inside the church were all up for discussion. Architect Neill Beasley, of The Genesis Design Studio, showed his ideas to the meeting with the cloister to be a modern extension to the abbey. Neill said: In order to get funding the thinking needs to be big. The proposals were well received across the board, and people felt encouraged about a cross-generational approach to the future of the Abbey.

THE bells of Romsey Abbey are set to ring out as the government begins to lift lockdown restrictions. The ringing is expected to resume after July 19, when the Prime Minister is expected to ease social distancing measures. The bells will be heard at the usual times on Sundays at 8.45am-9.30am and 5.45-6.30pm for services. The bells will also ring on a Wednesday between 7.30 and 9pm as the bell ringers get back to practicing their chimes and they may be rung before or after some wedding services. The bells have not sounded out normally since March 2020 when the group of 25 bell ringers were unable to gather indoors which makes this the longest wait the Romsey bells have had since World War two.
On July 21 at 6.30pm, The Market Place will host a Songs of Praise event. It will feature The Michelmersh Silver Band, Romsey Abbey Choir and Alice Wratten as cantor. This has been organised by Romsey Abbey and The Rotary Club of Romsey. Although most of the music will be favourite hymns it is planned to also sing We’ll Meet Again which has became the theme tune of lockdowns in this last year. Raymond Trickey will compère and conduct. The Rev’d Bryan Taphouse said: We really hope this will provide an opportunity for the Romsey community and beyond to come together again to sing after a very tough 15 months for many.
