A life of caring for family, environment

A life of caring for family, environment Share WELLWISHERS filled Baden Powell Park Scout Hall last month to mark the passing of Mount Eliza resident John Scholes. The dedicated civil engineer and environmentalist was remembered by wife Ann as a “gentle man of measured words, deep-thought and boundless practical skills”. Theirs was a life of family, Scouting, travel and care for the environment – all things dear to Mr Scholes’ heart. The couple met at RMIT in 1968 where he was studying chemical engineering and married at St James the Less Church, Mount Eliza, on the day of Gough Whitlam’s election in 1972. Their wedding breakfast was held in a marquee in Ann’s parents’ garden at Mount Martha.

Letters: The country wants to pay respects to the Duke who lived by ideals of duty and patriotism

SIR – What a wonderfully human person the Duke of Edinburgh was. In the 1960s, when I was a resident in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, the doctor’s mess was ill decorated. A doctor suggested that the only way to get it redecorated was to invite royalty to visit. We sent a letter inviting the Duke to dine in the doctor s mess. To our astonishment we received a reply saying that he would be delighted to accept the invitation on the next occasion that he was in Edinburgh. We kept the date secret but word got out during the week of the visit. A host of workmen descended and very rapidly redecorated and transformed the mess.

Gympie girl wins prestigious guide award

Mother and guide leader Leonora Cox said her daughter will be attending a formal presentation at Government House later this month. “Youth from all over Queensland are presented Queen’s Guide and Queen’s Scout awards and Gold Duke Of Edinburgh awards by the Governor of Queensland,” Ms Cox said. Rhiannon’s achievements towards winning the award include attending an Advanced Youth Leadership camp, travelling to the Solomon Islands with a ministry team from Cooloola Christian College and organising camps for other guides.
