July fatal crash leads to charges against driver

Thu, 01/14/2021 - 3:14pm tim Vermont State Police On July 9, 2020, at approximately 0318 hours, Troopers from the Vermont State Police – Rutland Barracks were assigned to a single vehicle crash with entrapment and ejection on West Street, in the Town of Proctor, Vermont. Through investigation it was determined Operator #1 was operating vehicle #1, traveling south on West Street when he swerved and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle s left side struck an embankment on the east side of the road and flipped on its roof. Operator #1 (Gage Capen) sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center (RRMC). Passenger #1 (Kianna Peters) was pronounced dead on scene. Passengers #2 and #3 were ejected from the vehicle and transported to RRMC for non-life-threatening injuries.

Rutland man gets eight years for possession of child pornography

Thu, 12/17/2020 - 4:46pm tim Vermont Business Magazine The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont stated that on December 17, 2020, David Hughes, 39, of Rutland, Vermont, was sentenced in United States District Court in Rutland, Vermont, to serve 96 months in prison after his guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography. Chief U.S. District Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford also ordered Hughes to serve a five (5) year term of supervised release, and to pay a $100 special assessment. According to court records and proceedings, in November 2018, an individual cleaning out his mother’s basement in Rutland, Vermont, came upon a box belonging to Hughes. Hughes had stored the box in the basement with the mother’s permission. The individual opened Hughes’ box and discovered VHS videotapes which depicted small children known to the individual engaging in sexually explicit activity. The individual also recognized Hughes’ voice on the tapes.

Little new information on Nov murder

Almost three weeks after a Holyoke, Massachusetts, man was found dead of a gunshot wound inside a room at the Quality Inn in Rutland, investigators have revealed little new information about the death but say they are still actively investigating. Jonathon Houghton, 35, of Holyoke, was identified Nov. 23 as the victim of the shooting. Houghton’s body was found Nov. 22. The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington conducted an autopsy and determined Houghton’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the torso and the manner of death was homicide. On Friday, Rutland City Police Department Chief Brian Kilcullen said he could only comment that the death was under active investigation by law-enforcement officers.
