Andy Matsuda, principal and CEO of the Sushi Chef Instititute, a vocational training school in Torrance, has started two new projects and held a showcase event on June 29.
COVID-19 is easing and the restaurant business, which had been forced to take a leave of absence or reduce operations for more than a year, is rapidly regaining its vitality. On the other hand, the industry is facing a labor shortage.
Matsuda said, “We get inquiries. They are desperately looking for chefs. Then I decided to start a matchmaking service that connects sushi chefs and restaurants.”

CSULB Administrator Mary Ann Takemoto Retiring

Dr. Mary Ann Takemoto, who has spent 16 of her 32 years in higher education as a leader in various capacities at CSU Long Beach, is retiring.
In a recent message to the campus community, CSULB Vice President for Student Affairs Beth Lesen said: “It is with mixed emotions that I announce the upcoming retirement of Dr. Mary Ann Takemoto … As most know, she has served this university as director of Counseling and Psychological Services, executive director of Student Health Services, associate vice president and interim vice president of Student Affairs.

Jan Perry to Lead Homeless Resource Group

Jan Perry, former three-term Los Angeles City Council member who represented Little Tokyo and most of Downtown Los Angeles from 2001-2013, has been named executive director of Shelter Partnership, Inc., an organization at the forefront of programs and policy addressing homelessness.

Perry was chosen for this role after the tragic death in March of Shelter Partnership, Inc. co-founder and long-time executive director Ruth Schwartz. Initially, Perry will step into this role on an interim basis.
