1st overall picks are rare sightings in Philly
Much like anything else that happened for the Flyers during the 2020-21 season, the odds of winning the 2021 NHL Draft Lottery don’t look good.
On June 2, the ping pong balls will be in motion and the Flyers reportedly have a 1.8-percent chance of winning the draw and selecting first in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, which will take place July 23-24.
The Flyers have the third-worst odds among lottery-eligible teams, ahead of only the Dallas Stars and New York Rangers. Those same Rangers won last year’s lottery with a 2.5-percent chance, so similar things have happened in the very recent past.

Bob “Battleship” Kelly didn’t merely say those words. He lived them.
Kelly played in the NHL from 1973-79 and for the Penguins from 1974-77. The 6-foot-2 left wing remains the best fighter I ever saw. Kelly threw fast, threw heavy and was fearless.
Kelly’s career high for penalty minutes in a season was 149, a low number for such an accomplished fighter. But there’s a good explanation: Most were reluctant to fight Kelly.
That included the aforementioned Broad Street Bullies : The Philadelphia Flyers goon-squad “champions” in 1974 and ’75. Bill Clement, later a network TV analyst, played for those Flyers. He once told me, “If you were on the rink at Pittsburgh and heard that song, you looked around and thought, ‘Oh, t.’ ”

On Wednesday, ESPN and the NHL announced a new, wide-ranging TV deal which, among other details, would bring 25 exclusive regular season games to ABC or ESPN along with four Stanley Cup Finals and half of the playoffs over the next seven seasons.
There was plenty of enthusiasm for the new contract, along with some expected wariness and disappointment. And all these feeling are justified: there’s a lot to unpack in the deal, with clear benefits and drawbacks.
As with most contracts and agreements in the sports media landscape (and beyond), there are winners and losers to this deal. Here’s our best attempt at identifying them in this deal.
