Planting again after two years of spring flooding

Todd Heigle farms corn and soybean in Issaquena County, Miss. After having dealt with spring flooding in the Mississippi Yazoo Backwater Area for two years, 2021 looks promising for a better planting and growing season. Todd Heigle, of Issaquena County, Miss., is happy to be planting after two years of battling flooding in the Yazoo Backwater Area. If it was not for God, we could not have gotten through these last couple of years, Heigle said. After the awful flooding in 2019, the year 2020 started much the same way. Luckily, we were able to get most of the land planted late, unlike in 2019 when we could not plant hardly anything.

Coastal News Today | MS - Conservation groups sue Engineer Corps over Yazoo Pumps

American Rivers, National Audubon Society, Sierra Club and Healthy Gulf filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C on Wednesday against the Corps and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The same group already sued the Environmental Protection Agency in January in an attempt to block the construction of pumps in the Yazoo Backwater area north of Vicksburg. The newest lawsuit claims the Corps “severely underestimated the pumps’ devastating impacts and failed to inform the public about the true costs of the project.” The group says the Yazoo Pumps would drain thousands of acres of wetlands that support more than 450 species of fish and wildlife, including several federally endangered species.
