Gold Key – Lobby Luxury
The Highlights: Designers faced two challenges at this beloved resort. First, how to tackle the massive renovation? Second, what’s the best way to spotlight and embrace local culture to create an authentic and contemporary experience? The answer: Give it some soul. At the heart of the public space is a loggia around which the program unfolds. There, a centuries-old canoe, a remnant of the property’s previous life, highlights the base of the central stair. In the multistory atrium, the design team crafted a central hale structure, added murals by local artists, and created seating zones to control circulation.
Gold Key – Restaurant Fine Dining
The Highlights: Following in the footsteps of sister projects Quality Meats and Quality Italian, the design for Quality Bistro is based on an imaginary character and their home. Quality Bistro uses the French countryside as its point of departure, capturing the spirit of a fictionalized Belle Époque era hotel but caught in the 1970s, overrun by the outside gardens and gilded with mirrored walls and opaline chandeliers throughout. The restaurant trumpets all manner of fowl, with birds in framed scenes or painted throughout directly on the wood columns, tiled walls, and caned panels.

Gold Key – Restaurant Casual Dining
The Highlights: Chica’s spicy interiors celebrate a blend of contemporary Latin American influences as well as the traditionally open, airy residences and hospitality spaces found throughout the region. The restaurant pairs a vibrant palette of tropical colors with regional inspirations from Cuba, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, evoking the legendary cigar lounges of South America, with reference to vibrant Miami nightlife. Sophisticated finishes such as handpainted cement Mexican tiles, Brazilian teak stained wood, rich mahogany, tobacco leather, and polished brass are showcased throughout.

Gold Key – Resort
The Highlights: Following a four-year renovation (and Hurricane Irma), this Caribbean resort’s design is inspired by the laidback lifestyle and nautical qualities of its home in the British Virgin Islands and celebrates roots dating back to the 1960s. Then considered a leading example of ecotourism, the newly constructed resort stays true to the original property’s vision of “earth in balance,” with its footprint and structures remaining the same as when they first emerged. At the same time, the place’s essential character is omnipresent through the inventive use of local materials, distinctive color schemes, authentic artifacts, and dynamic elements that bring the external atmosphere indoors.
