CIRV hosts interventions to stem the tide of Youngstown violence

(Photo by William D. Lewis | Mahoning Matters) YOUNGSTOWN  The Community Initiative to Reduce Violence hosted a gun violence call-in program on Thursday at Youngstown Municipal Court. The program is focused on addressing people who have been involved in violence, including those on probation or who have had other run-ins with law enforcement. Guy Burney, director of CIRV, said if there aren t interventions now, some people might soon become another violence causality statistic in the city. Police are battling a surge of gun violence. On Wednesday night, the Youngstown Police Department responded to a report of gunfire at West Boston Avenue and Idlewood Avenue. A man who was found in a shot-up vehicle was declared dead at the scene.

YOUNGSTOWN Two juveniles now are charged in the early Wednesday shooting of a girl in her bed in the 800 block of East Avondale Avenue. Kasean R. Wilkerson, 16, of East Lucius Avenue, and Xavier Hile, 16, of Buckeye Circle, both had initial hearings Thursday in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center on charges of felonious assault and discharging a firearm at or into a habitation, school or safety zone. Both charges carry specifications that could add time to their detention if the allegations are found to be true. Not-true pleas were entered for both boys during their hearings, and both were ordered to remain in juvenile detention. Their next hearings are not scheduled yet.

Girl, 13, shot in drive-by | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN A girl, 13, was shot in the lower leg while in her bed at 2 a.m. Wednesday in a drive-by shooting at her home in the 800 block of East Avondale Avenue on the South Side. The girl is in stable condition at a local hospital and is expected to be OK, Youngstown police Chief Carl Davis said. Jana M. Cox, 25, who had an address in Warren in 2016, according to unrelated Mahoning County court records, was charged with felonious assault and shooting into a habitation Wednesday afternoon and is in the Mahoning County jail. Youngstown Law Director Jeff Limbian, who filed the charges, provided her name. She is likely to be arraigned today in Youngstown Municipal Court.

YOUNGSTOWN Erik Jenkins, 25, turned himself in at the Mahoning County jail Tuesday afternoon, about an hour after the Youngstown Police Department had a news conference to announce he’d been charged with murder. Jenkins, of Columbus, is charged in the March 4 killing of Thomas C. Williams, 34, in the parking lot of King’s Court tavern, 3223 South Ave., and the wounding of a security guard from the tavern.
