The Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies gets underway Wednesday (May 19) with three divisions at Harrah’s Philadelphia. Among those making seasonal debuts in the event are two stakes-winners from the stable of trainer Ron Burke: Blue Diamond Eyes and Continualou.
Blue Diamond Eyes won last year’s Three Diamonds Stakes and was both the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes and Kentucky Sire Stakes champion. Continualou closed her 2020 campaign with a 1:50.2 score in the Matron Stakes at Dover Downs that was only one-fifth of a second off the world record for a two-year-old pacing fillies on a five-eighths-mile track.
“I think with a better draw in the Breeders Crown, Blue Diamond Eyes would have had a shot at being the two-year-old filly of the year,” Burke said. “Continualou was unbelievable. She did great early and then hit a little bit of a rough patch. Then she just turned it around at the end of the year. Very rarely do you race a horse back into racing good
The Meadowlands will again host some of the sport’s top prospects, but this time with an expanded roster of stakes talent hitting the track.
A 16-qualifier session on Saturday morning (April 24) begins with three-year-old trotting fillies, with $400,000 yearling and full-sister to The Ice Dutchess, The Ice Countess ($2,500, 1:56.3M), going to post. Todd McCarthy will steer the Tony Alagna trainee as she makes just the fourth start of her career. She’ll be followed in the next qualifier by several other prominent Hambletonian Oaks eligible including Hello I Love You ($105,987, 1:54.2M), Illuminata ($131,933, 1:54.4F) and Pub Crawl ($225,725, 1:53.4M).
