The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP) have appeaeled to the Malawi Police Service to institute swift investigation into criminal elements surrounding the Salima violence and ensure that perpetrators are brought before the courts of law.

The two human rights watchdogs say they are dismayed by the continued attacks on people accused of witchcraft in the country and the failure to bring to justice perpetrators of such crimes.
Senior Chief Mbenje Dies
Senior Chief Mbenje of Nsanje has died.
Nsanje District Commissioner, Dr. Medson Matchaya, says the Senior Chief, real name Tiferanji Vizyalona, died today morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe.
“Arrangements are underway to repatriate the remains to Nsanje for burial. Details of burial will be communicated later,” he said.
According to a relation to the deceased, King Norman Rudi, Senior Chief Mbenje has succumbed to Covid-19.
“He was tested positive for Covid-19 two weeks ago. He was seeking medical treatment at Dr. Kalanda’s hospital in area 18 and thereafter transferred to KCH yesterday where he breathed his last this morning.
Where Malawi Stands on Same-Sex Marriage
President Lazarus Chakwera has no clear stance on the legalisation of same-sex marriage and has left it to the citizens to determine whether or not to legalise it, Brian Banda, the presidential press secretary has said. He added that the president is ready to listen to diverse opinions on the contentious issue. However, while welcoming the idea, Luke Tembo, the national coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition, said that the president needed to provide leadership on how the issue should be handled.
