Workforce shortage challenges reemerge as Wisconsin businesses dig out of the pandemic

MITCHELL SCHMIDT Wisconsin’s return to near pre-pandemic unemployment levels has brought with it the reemergence of one of the biggest challenges facing some of the state’s largest industries — a workforce shortage. The need for workers in multiple sectors of the economy has Republicans and the state’s largest business lobby calling on the state to end its participation in enhanced federal pandemic unemployment benefits, which they say creates a disincentive to work. Liberals point to long-term structural changes as an opportunity to provide higher wages, better benefits, more skills-based training and adequate child care offerings — a need that was drastically amplified with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic — as necessary to get more Wisconsinites into the workforce.

As far as the economy goes, we might want to start spelling 'pandemic' with a 'K'

As far as the economy goes, we might want to start spelling pandemic with a K Joe Taschler, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel © Michael Sears / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Stein Mart is closing at the Brookfield Fashion Center mall at 16720 W. Blue Mound Road in Brookfield, where several businesses are in the process of closing their doors or have closed. Department stores and many mall-based specialty retailers have closed stores, laid off workers and declared bankruptcy since the pandemic has lingered. With apologies to Sesame Street, the U.S. economy has emerged from six months of  the COVID-19 pandemic looking a lot like the letter K.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to reduce income inequality is echoed in Joe Biden's $15-an-hour minimum wage proposal

Martin Luther King Jr. s call to reduce income inequality is echoed in Joe Biden s $15-an-hour minimum wage proposal Talis Shelbourne, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel © Angela Peterson / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Melinda Harmon was working at Fiserv Forum and was laid off. She is now at Family Dollar, working fewer hours. She is hoping for a $15 minimum wage so she doesn t fall further behind on rent and bills. Melinda Harmon is 39 and has two boys at home, ages 14 and 20. Before the pandemic struck, she was working at Fiserv Forum where, under a community benefits agreement between the local union and Forum management, she was on track to make $15 an hour, plus tips, as a bartender.

Black and Latina women carried the brunt of job loss in December

PolitiFact s ruling: True Here s why: When the Bureau of Labor Statistics issued its latest job numbers, the Jan. 8, 2021 release brought a jaw-dropping number to light – from November to December the U.S. economy lost 140,000 jobs. Then came another jaw-dropper: As a group, only women lost jobs. Then came this claim, from Wisconsin Treasurer Sarah Godlewski. On Jan. 9, 2021, she tweeted a link to a CNN article about the job losses among women with this comment: This headline is hiding something from you. It wasn’t all women that lost jobs, it was mostly Black and Latina women. In fact, white women gained employment. Any response we have to this pandemic and economy has to also address structural inequality.
