DA-Central Visayas, Cevippco support export ban of live hogs

February 01, 2021 THE Department of Agriculture (DA) 7 has welcomed the move by Cebu Province to impose a six-month moratorium on the export of live hogs to other areas in the country, saying this will protect Central Visayas from a possible supply shortage. DA 7 Director Salvador Diputado said the moratorium would also allow time for the repopulation of hogs in the region. “We don’t have any shortage yet. That is precisely why Governor Garcia issued the executive order, so we can protect our local supply,” he said. “The order is protecting our local consumers and at the same time our hog producers in the region will be able to repopulate. If there is increased buying activity, then they will be able to produce more,” Diputado explained.

SunStar File photo January 25, 2021 CENTRAL Visayas has been on heightened alert since Jan. 15, 2021, after the first case of the African swine fever (ASF) was detected in Eastern Visayas, or Region 8. Despite the Department of Agriculture (DA) 8’s assurance that it has managed to curb the spread of the disease in three barangays in Leyte by culling more than 1,000 hogs, DA 7 Director Salvador Diputado met with Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Friday, Jan. 22, to discuss further measures to prevent ASF’s entry to the region, particularly to Cebu Province. Diputado said Garcia was updated on the ASF situation in the towns of Abuyog, Paz and Javier in Leyte.

Cevippco to prioritize local pork demand amid supply issue in Luzon

SunStar + LOCAL requirements will come first. This was the assurance of Central Visayas Pork Producers Cooperative president Paul Holaysan following the reported dwindling supply of pork in Luzon which caused prices to spike anew. “For Cebu we have enough supply for our local consumption. We are supplying Luzon, but we would prioritize our own local requirements,” Holaysan told SunStar Cebu. A national report said prices of pork products such as pork belly have soared to as high as P380 to P400 a kilo in major public markets in Metro Manila, way higher than the suggested retail price of P225 a kilo.
