Clive Palmer-owned coal mine rejected due to unacceptable impacts on Reef, water
In a massive win for the community, environment and Reef, today the Queensland Department of Environment and Science has recommended the Clive Palmer-owned proposed Central Queensland Coal Project does not proceed due to unacceptable impacts on the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage Area, the Styx River Estuary, water sources, and the Broad Sound Fish Habitat.
The Assessment Report released by the Queensland Department of Environment and Science is the first time a new coal mine has been recommended not to proceed in Queensland:
“Taking into account all of the relevant information, I have determined that overall, the project poses a number of unacceptable risks and that the project, as proposed, is not suitable. As such, I consider that the project is not suitable to proceed.”

âI would welcome the opportunity for the team to come up again.
âI really want to stress we are not anti-resource or anti-coal, we just had more questions about the project in general.â
Cr Williams has been in talks with the company, which is owned by Clive Palmer, that has agreed to do a presentation at a council meeting in the near future.
Cr Williams agreed if it was approached again to offer a letter of support it would do so.
âWe are supportive of the resource sector,â he said.
Central Queensland Coal Pty Ltdâs website states it is committed to the environment and minimising the impacts its work has on it.
The mayor and two councillors at Rockhampton Regional Council have formally rejected providing support for Clive Palmer’s proposed coal project - a day before its final environmental approval deadline.
The Central Queensland Coal Project is a proposed metallurgical coal development located on the Bruce Hwy, near St Lawrence, between Rockhampton and Mackay.
The company plans to commence construction in July 2022 and would employ up to 250 people.
It is currently awaiting State Government and Commonwealth approval before construction and operations can begin.
The project has been subject to concerns from the Independent Expert Scientific Committee (IESC) on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development.
