WPU Places Ninth at Heart Championships Des Moines–A small yet mighty crew of Statesmen women’s track and field athletes performed admirably at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships Friday and Saturday. WPU finished ninth out of 13 programs with 44 points, while Grand View claimed the team crown with 176 points. Three individuals scored points in multiple events, led by a pair of bronzes from Katherine Hunter (Jr., Bloomfield, Iowa) in the hurdles. The junior hit the line in 15.76 seconds in the 100 and 1:06.90 in the 400. Sprinter Shaniah Newby (So., Twentynine Palms, Calif., Nursing) was right behind Hunter in points, taking third in the 100-meter dash (12.90) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.97). Newby was much faster in the preliminary race, breaking her own school record at 25.01 seconds. Her previous mark of 25.27 came last month at the same track.

Four Crowns for WPU at Home Meet Oskaloosa–A quartet of William Penn women’s track and field athletes claimed titles as the program hosted the William Penn Statesmen Invitational Friday. Danisha Washington (Jr., Peoria, Ill.) was the fastest female on the track as she posted a winning 100-meter dash time of 12.62 seconds. Raven Williams (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) took home the gold in the 400 with a time of 1:02.55, while Michaela Kmiec (So., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science) earned the victory in the 800-meter run at 2:34.37. Abigaille Batu-Tiako (So., Plattsburgh, N.Y.) headlined WPU’s jumping crew winning the long jump with a mark of 16-7.75.

Statesmen Qualifiers Just Miss Stand at Nationals Yankton, S.D.–For the first time in several campaigns, the William Penn track and field teams were not able to bring home any hardware as they competed at the NAIA Indoor National Championship Wednesday through Saturday. Men’s high jumper Mofiyinfoluwa Alade (Sr., Hoffman Estates, Ill., Exercise Science) was in action, as was the women’s 4×400-meter relay team composed of Michaela Kmiec (So., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science), Shaniah Newby (So., Twentynine Palms, Calif., Nursing), Ashley Omoregie (Jr., Old Bridge, N.J., Biology), and Raven Williams (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.). On Wednesday, the ladies hit the track for the preliminaries. The team, unfortunately, did not qualify for the finals, posting a time of 4:04.75, which placed William Penn 14th out of the 16 squads in the field.
